Welcome Gene M. Massey, MD
Strand Orthopaedic Consultants is proud to welcome Gene M. Massey, MD, to its group of 11 specialty physicians. Dr. Massey is a fellowship trained Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in Spine Surgery. He is dedicated to providing comprehensive care of all back, neck, and spine conditions and has received extensive training in minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Massey comes to the Grand Strand from Duke University Medical Center, where he served as faculty while completing his fellowship training in Spine Surgery. He developed his South Carolina roots during his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at the University of South Carolina, where he was named Resident of the Year as a Chief. Raised in Kentucky, Dr. Massey received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Louisville, where he graduated with highest distinction.
Dr. Massey has also been recognized for his clinical research. He has co-authored papers on the treatment of adult scoliosis, cervical myelopathy, and lumbar facet cysts. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the AO Spine Foundation, and the International Spine Intervention Society.
Dr. Massey is available to see new patients at our state of the art facility in Carolina Forest. With this new addition to our Spine team, we are confident that we will continue to provide comprehensive and responsive care to your patients with spine related conditions.
Richard W. Ward, MD honored by Coastal Carolina University
On November 29, 2011, Richard W. Ward, MD of Strand Orthopaedic Consultants was honored by Coastal Carolina University for his dedication to the University and their Athletic Program. Dr. Ward is a board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon who is fellowship trained in Sports Medicine. Dr. Ward has given countless hours of his time to the athletes of Coastal Carolina University. He has had a presence there since 1981 as the Team Physician for all sports. As the Team Physician, Dr. Ward covers home sporting events, holds a weekly clinic for injured athletes, travels to away games, as well as assisting in educating athletic training interns.
State of the Art Facility
In an effort to continue our long tradition of excellence in all aspects of orthopaedic care, we want you to be aware of the advancements that have been made to our practice. We have combined our three offices into one large facility located a couple of miles from our surgery center in the Carolina Forest area.
In order to more efficiently serve you, our x-rays are fully digital. This will make it easier for you to obtain copies if you should need them. Our state-of-the-art imaging suite features Siemens 1.5T Symphony MRI. We will also continue to offer Bone Density exams through our Delphi Hologic DEXASCAN.
The new facility is easily accessible off Hwy 31 coming from either direction, located just off International Boulevard.

Consisting of ten board-certified and one board-eligible orthopaedic surgeons, the group is representative of some of the finest medical schools in the nation. It is our mission to get patients "back to life" and "back in the game" and help them resume normal activities in the safest and shortest amount of time.
As the first Orthopaedic group to treat sports related injuries in the area, Strand Orthopaedic Consultants has consistently been the leader in our field. In fact, we helped to develop programs to certify and place athletic trainers in Horry County Schools. We strive to increase our knowledge and role in treating Orthopaedics and our community has made us the most respected group in Orthopaedic Specialists you can choose for your treatment.
